Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors around that, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
