Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
