Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the right to question certain decisions made by the official, echoing the system already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
